Uniform Connectedness, 2023, latex paint on canvas, 6' x 6'

There are several ways our brains interpret visual information in order to simplify our sensory experiences. The principle uniform connectedness explains the tendency our brains have to view objects refined to a certain frame as one group despite their similarity to other shapes outside of the frame. Each square in this piece acts as a frame grouping the circles within it; even though all of the circles are evenly spaced we still perceive them as being in small groups of nine. Simultaneously, due to the principle of closure, our brains want to group together the green creating the illusion of larger circles. These competing groupings make it hard for the brain to easily simplify what you’re seeing, and in turn, making the design appear much more elaborate than it is.
